Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) strongly condemns the alleged unlawful detention of Hasan Sheekh Ali Ismaaciil, also known as Hasan Koranto, the Director of the independent media outlet GOODIR TV, in Borama, Awdal region.
SRS calls on the Governor of Awdal Region, Abdirashid Hassan Mataan, and all relevant authorities to immediately clarify the reasons for the journalist’s detention and to ensure full respect for his fundamental rights, as well as the principles of press freedom.
“Judicial and security authorities must ensure that journalist Hasan Sheekh Ali is afforded due process and a fair legal procedure. If there are any allegations against him, they should be formally presented and addressed in accordance with the law,” said SRS spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled.
Press freedom is a fundamental pillar of a democratic and peaceful society. It enables citizens to access reliable information, diverse perspectives, and news concerning issues that affect their daily lives and communities.
“When a journalist is intimidated, threatened, or subjected to pressure to abandon their professional duties, the consequences extend beyond the individual journalist. Such actions also undermine the public’s right to access information and exercise freedom of expression,” said SRS spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled
