MOGADISHU – Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) strongly condemns the arbitrary arrests of two journalists in the cities of Bosaso and Beledweyne, describing the detentions as a serious violation of press freedom and the fundamental right to freedom of expression. The incidents further heighten concerns over the deteriorating safety of journalists across Somalia.
In Bosaso, independent journalist Mohamed Jama was arrested by Puntland security forces and transferred to a detention facility operated by the Puntland Intelligence Agency (PISA), a center primarily designated for individuals accused of serious criminal offenses. At the time of his arrest, no legal basis or formal charges had been made public.
In Beledweyne, Libaan Suubane Da’uud, the Hiiraan correspondent for Shabelle Media Network, was also arrested by security forces. SRS has received credible information confirming that he was physically assaulted before being taken into custody, raising serious concerns about his safety and well-being.

SRS calls on the Puntland and Hirshabelle authorities to immediately and unconditionally release the detained journalists unless they are promptly charged with a recognizable criminal offense in accordance with due process and international human rights standards.
SRS further urges all Somali federal and regional authorities to respect constitutional guarantees protecting freedom of the press, end the arbitrary detention and intimidation of journalists, and ensure that media professionals can carry out their work without fear of harassment, violence, or reprisals.
