“The blockade on Uganda’s independent media must be lifted” – SRS.

The SRS strongly condemns the actions targeting independent media in Uganda after the country’s army commander—who is the son of President Yoweri Museveni—ordered the closure of television stations, newspapers, and radio stations.

“We join the calls of African and international journalists’ organizations for the immediate lifting of the blockade and restrictions imposed on independent media, and urge the authorities to ensure that journalists can carry out their work without fear, intimidation, or interference,” the SRS said.

Freedom of the press is a fundamental right protected under international and regional human rights law. Independent media plays a vital role in promoting democracy, transparency, and public accountability.

According to Daily Monitor, armed security personnel were deployed outside its headquarters in Kampala, while NTV Uganda and Spark TV were taken off the air. The affected outlets are part of Nation Media Group, one of East Africa’s largest and most influential independent media companies.
