MOGADISHU- The UK Embassy in Somalia convened a key meeting in Mogadishu to discuss the state of freedom of expression and the safety of Somali journalists.
The meeting comes amid growing concerns over media repression, arbitrary arrests, and the harassment of journalists operating in Mogadishu.
The UK Ambassador to Somalia, Mr. Charles King, attended the discussions alongside media representatives who highlighted the current press freedom situation and explored measures needed to address ongoing challenges
SRS Chairman and Spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled outlined the difficult conditions facing Somali journalists, particularly referencing the arrest of five journalists working in the capital yesterday.
Participants expressed deep concern over the state of freedom of expression in the country and called for the protection of constitutional rights and international conventions that guarantee freedom of expression and safeguard citizens’ rights.
