MOGADISHU — Security forces of the Somali Federal Government detained three journalists operating in Mogadishu on Friday evening.
The detained journalists have been identified as:
Abdishakur Mohamed Mohamud
Mohamed Ibrahim Bulbul
Abdixafiid Nur Barre
Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) issued a formal condemnation of these arrests, characterizing the actions as unlawful. The organization asserts that these detentions violate the Provisional Constitution of Somalia and contravene international human rights standards regarding freedom of expression and press liberties.
“We call for the immediate and unconditional release of these journalists,” an SRS spokesperson stated. “Furthermore, we urge the relevant authorities to ensure their safety and physical integrity while they remain in government custody.”
This latest incident follows the detention of five other media professionals just twenty-four hours prior. This brings the total number of journalists arrested in Mogadishu to eight within a 72-hour period, signaling a concerning trend for media safety in the capital.
