MOGADISHU — Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) strongly condemns the unlawful arrest of three journalists — Abuukar Keynaan of RTN, Deeq Macallin Jiinow of Xamar 24 TV, and Hassan Diyaabi of RNN Somali TV — who were detained in the Marinaayo area of Abdiaziz District while carrying out their professional duties.
“SRS condemns the degrading and abusive treatment inflicted on the journalists by members of the Haramcad forces, including forcing them to sit on the roadside under the scorching sun and confiscating their work equipment,” said SRS Spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled.
“It is unacceptable for journalists performing their lawful duties to be arrested, intimidated, or subjected to the use of force. Journalists play a vital role in ensuring the public’s access to truth and information, and they must be treated in accordance with the law and with full respect for their rights,” he added.
SRS further calls on all journalists covering demonstrations and public events to exercise maximum caution and prioritize their safety while conducting their journalistic responsibilities.
