Share

MOGADISHU — Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) recently hosted a formal ceremony in Mogadishu to honor Somali journalists who have demonstrated exceptional professionalism, resilience, and courage. The event recognized those who perform their duties with distinction despite the significant challenges facing the country’s media sector.

Recognition of Sacrifice and Dedication

For the first time, SRS presented awards to 25 journalists in recognition of their dedication to providing Somali citizens with accurate information. This initiative aimed not only to celebrate their sacrifices but also to actively strengthen their safety and overall well-being.

Enhancing Safety and Social Support

Acknowledging the high risks inherent in the profession, SRS emphasized the urgent need for sustainable support systems. As a practical step toward this goal:

Health Insurance: For the first time, journalists were provided with health insurance cards for themselves and their families.

Welfare Focus: This move acknowledges the essential living needs of reporters, ensuring they have security outside of their professional duties.

Community and Sectoral Collaboration

The event was attended by Somali medical professionals, business leaders, and various civil society representatives. This diverse attendance highlights the importance of collaboration between the media and other sectors to drive sustainable national development.

A Commitment to Professional Ethics

In its closing remarks, SRS urged Somali journalists to remain steadfast in their commitment to professional standards. The organization called on the media to:

Uphold ethics and maintain high levels of integrity.

Avoid unverified reporting to prevent the spread of misinformation.

Foster unity by playing an active role in building an informed and cohesive society.
