MOGADISHU — Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) has issued a call for the full protection of press freedom as the world marks World Press Freedom Day on May 3.

SRS underscores that a free, independent, and professional media sector plays a crucial role in fostering peace, accountability, and sustainable development by providing accurate information to the public.

Aligned with this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom,” SRS urges the creation of a safe, enabling environment in which journalists can work without fear, intimidation, or restriction.

“Journalism is not a crime, yet many in our country continue to face grave risks just for speaking the truth,” said SRS spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled. “We cannot talk about democracy or progress while those who hold power accountable are silenced through fear.”
Call to Action.

SRS calls on the Somali government and security agencies to ensure the protection of journalists and to end harassment, intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and unlawful detention of media personnel.

SRS reiterates that safeguarding press freedom is a shared responsibility and remains essential to building a peaceful, democratic, and sustainable future.
