MOGADISHU – Safe Reporters of Somalia extends its congratulations and commendations to the newly elected Chairperson of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, Dr. Maryan Qaasim Ahmed, and the Deputy Chairperson, Mohamed Harun—a representative for people with disabilities—who were elected today in Mogadishu.
The SRS welcomes Chairperson Dr. Maryan Qaasim and her deputy, both of whom have been at the forefront of community service and human rights advocacy, particularly for women, children, and vulnerable groups.
“We urge the Chairperson of the commission, Dr. Maryan Qaasim, to take decisive action against the ongoing abuses, suppression, and violations committed against journalists, who are frequently targeted because of their professional work,” — SRS.
The SRS hopes that the commission’s leadership will spearhead visible change and that the Independent National Human Rights Commission will function as an autonomous body that prevents violations against Somali journalists and citizens alike.
