MOGADISHU – The Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) has expressed serious concern over the recent arrests and growing pressure on journalists operating in the capital, Mogadishu.
In the past 24 hours, three journalists—including one female reporter—were detained by security forces in separate incidents, raising alarms about the shrinking space for press freedom in the country.
Hibo Mohamed Mohamud and cameraman Sakariye Jinte, both affiliated with Daash Somali TV, were arrested in the Warta Nabadda district while reporting from the Sinaay Vegetable Market. Authorities have not disclosed the reason for their detention.
Just hours later, Mohamed Abdukadir of Arlaadi Media was arrested in the Wadajir district under similarly unclear circumstances.
“These incidents reflect a troubling pattern of intimidation and restrictions on journalists,” said Hanad Ali Guled, spokesperson for Safe Reporters of Somalia. “We urge the authorities to ensure the safety of all media professionals and to take immediate steps to protect press freedom in Somalia.”
SRS calls on relevant government bodies and human rights organizations to investigate these incidents and to ensure that journalists can carry out their work without fear of harassment, detention, or violence.
