MOGADISHU – Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) expresses deep concern over the detention of 19 journalists from various media houses who were arrested today at Yaqshiid district Police Station in Mogadishu while carrying out their professional duties.
SRS views the continued detention, intimidation, and obstruction of journalists as a direct attempt to silence the media and deny the public access to timely and accurate information. Such actions undermine press freedom and contradict the principles of transparency and accountability.
Reports confirm that security personnel harassed Mohamed Khadar, the Deputy Director of Himilo Media, and confiscated media equipment in his possession—an additional violation of media rights and professional freedoms.“It is unacceptable for government security agencies to detain or restrict hardworking journalists who dedicate themselves to informing the public. The government must respond urgently,” said Hanad Ali Guled, Spokesperson for SRS.
SRS remains committed to defending press freedom and ensuring a safe working environment for all journalists in Somalia
