Hargeisa, November 4, 2025 — The Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) strongly condemns the unlawful detention of two journalists in Hargeisa on Tuesday, describing the arrests as a clear violation of press freedom and fundamental human rights.
The detained journalists, Mohamed Andar and Ahmed Heersare , a cameraman, both affiliated with MM Somali TV, were reportedly taken into custody by security forces in Hargeisa, Somaliland, without any official explanation or legal justification.
“Journalists are the eyes and voices of society. Their arrest amounts to silencing the entire Somaliland community,” said Hanad Ali Guled, Spokesperson for SRS.
SRS urges Somaliland authorities to immediately and unconditionally release the detained journalists. The organization also calls on human rights bodies, media organizations, and international partners to hold the government accountable for upholding media freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists across the region.
