MOGADISHU – Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) strongly condemns the arrest of Najib Farah, a cameraman for Shabelle TV, who was detained by Somali government forces at the Hodan District Police Station in Mogadishu while covering a news assignment.
Najib was reportedly held in a room with individuals accused of crimes, causing him distress and intimidation. He has since been released, but his arrest highlights the continued harassment faced by journalists in Somalia.
“The Somali government must ensure the safety of journalists and end the ongoing intimidation of media workers,” said an SRS spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled.
SRS has documented 10 journalist arrests in November alone, reflecting a worrying escalation in press freedom violations. SRS urges authorities to stop targeting journalists and uphold media rights.
