MOGADISHU – Seven journalists from various media outlets were arrested in Mogadishu on Sunday while covering a murder case in the Ceelqalow neighborhood of Wadajir District.
According to several journalists who spoke to Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS), security officers deleted footage recorded at the scene before releasing the journalists after more than two hours of detention in Ceelqalow.
The detained journalists were:
1.Mohamed Abdi Hassan – M24 Somali TV
2.Osman Hassan – Five TV
3.Hibo Mohamed – Daash TV
4.Qoslaye Mohamed – Bidhaan TV
5.Abdikani Sacid – Hirasho TV
6.Ibrahim Shakeeye – Hirasho TV
7.Zakariye Ahmed – Daash TV
SRS strongly condemned the arrests and called on authorities to respect press freedom and ensure the safety of media professionals.
“The continued intimidation and detention of journalists is unacceptable. The government must guarantee the protection of journalists and uphold freedom of expression,” SRS’s spokes person Hanad Ali Guled says
