Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) Urges Immediate Release of Himilo TV Journalists

Share

MOGADISHU — Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) expresses deep concern over the arrest of Ahmed Mohamed Aden, Director of Himilo TV, and Khadar Abdirahim Ibrahim, Deputy Director, who were detained today in Mogadishu.

SRS views this incident as a serious infringement on press freedom and a violation of the right to free expression guaranteed under the Provisional Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Such actions undermine the independence of the media and threaten journalists’ ability to carry out their vital role in informing the public.

SRS calls on the Somali authorities to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of the detained journalists and to refrain from any measures that restrict the work of independent media organizations.

“The continued intimidation and arrest of journalists is unacceptable and poses a grave threat to Somalia’s democratic progress,” said Hanad Ali Guled, Spokesperson for Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS). “We urge the authorities to uphold constitutional protections for press freedom and ensure journalists can operate without fear or harassment.”

Conclusion:

Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending press freedom and protecting the rights of journalists across the country. SRS urges all stakeholders — including government institutions, civil society, and international partners — to work together to create a safe and enabling environment for independent journalism in Somalia.
