Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) strongly condemns the October 7, 2025, verdict issued by the Togdheer Regional Court of Appeal against journalist Abdiasis Cawl, a member of the KF Media TV.
The Court of Appeal overturned an earlier acquittal by the Togdheer Regional Court and sentenced the journalist to one year in prison and a fine of two million Somaliland shillings.
“This verdict underscores the growing pressure on journalists in Somaliland, particularly those covering social and political issues,” said Hanad Ali Guled, Spokesperson for Safe Reporters of Somalia.
SRS views this ruling as a serious miscarriage of justice and a clear attempt to intimidate independent journalists in the region.
SRS urges Somaliland’s judicial authorities and regional administration to review the decision, respect press freedom, and ensure the safety and rights of journalists in accordance with both regional and international legal standards.
