Radio Marka Suspended — SRS: “Silencing the Voice of the People Is Unacceptable”

Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) has condemned the suspension of Radio Marka, a station widely regarded as the only consistent source of daily news for residents of the coastal city.

The move comes as Radio Marka journalists staged a strike on Saturday, protesting what they describe as sustained pressure, threats, and interference from the city administration — actions they say have increasingly obstructed the station’s ability to operate independently and serve the public interest.

“This is a serious blow to freedom of expression, the community’s access to credible information, and the safety of journalists in Marka, Lower Shabelle,” said SRS spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled.

SRS warns that targeting media outlets undermines constitutional rights and weakens democratic accountability. The organization is urging authorities to respect press freedom and ensure journalists can carry out their work without intimidation or interference.
