Burco, Togdheer – The Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) strongly condemns today’s ruling by the Burco District Court in Somaliland’s Togdheer Region, which ordered journalist Abdicasiis Cawl, a reporter with KF Media TV, to remain three days in jail.
This verdict represents an act of intimidation against the press, further shrinking the space for free expression and denying the public access to independent information.
“Such a sentence undermines journalistic work and endangers freedom of expression. We call for stronger protections for press rights,” said Hanad Ali Gulled, spokesperson for SRS.
SRS calls on government and judicial authorities in Somaliland to respect press freedom, safeguard the rights of journalists, and allow them to carry out their professional duties without harassment or interference.
SRS reaffirms its commitment of supporting journalists, defending their profession, and promoting independent reporting that serves the public interest.
