Nation TV Editor Arrested in Mogadishu; “Arbitrary Detention of Journalists Must End” – SRS

MOGADISHU – Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) strongly condemns the unlawful arrest of Mohamed Mumin, Editor of Nation TV, who was detained in Mogadishu on Tuesday.

Mr. Mumin was held for several hours at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters without a court warrant, formal charges, or due legal process. He was released only after prolonged questioning.

SRS notes that this arbitrary detention constitutes a clear violation of the Provisional Federal Constitution of Somalia, national laws, and international human rights treaties to which Somalia is a party, all of which guarantee freedom of expression and press freedom.

“Summoning, arresting, or detaining journalists in connection with their professional duties is an act of repression that obstructs access to information, weakens accountability, and erodes public trust,” said SRS Spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled.

SRS reiterates that press freedom is a cornerstone of democratic governance and the rule of law. Journalists must not be subjected to intimidation, harassment, or unlawful arrest for carrying out their legitimate work.

SRS calls on the Somali authorities to immediately end the practice of targeting journalists, to respect constitutional guarantees, and to ensure a safe and enabling environment for independent media.
