GEDO – Journalist Ali Mohamed Diiriye, widely known as Ali Yare, a correspondent for Gedo Kalsan TV and a contributor to Radio Gedo, has been detained for more than 24 hours in Doolow district of the Gedo region.
Officials from the Jubbaland administration in Doolow are reported to have arrested the journalist and are holding him in a privately controlled shipping container rather than a formal detention facility. Local journalists told SRS that the officials currently stationed in Doolow are responsible for his arrest and continued detention.
In a statement, Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) expressed serious concern over the conditions of his detention. “SRS is deeply alarmed that journalist Ali Yare is being held outside an official police station, in a container managed by security officials. This situation poses a serious risk to his safety and undermines both press freedom and the public interest of the people of Gedo,” the organization said.
The journalist is normally based in Beledxawo district and was arrested while traveling to Doolow. Sources indicate that the primary reason for his detention is linked to news reports he published that reportedly displeased the district administration.
