What We Do

SRS combines advocacy, capacity-building, and direct support to protect journalists and strengthen independent media in Somalia. Our key areas of work include:

  • Advocacy for Press Freedom: We campaign for stronger legal protections for journalists, work to end impunity for crimes against the media, and engage with policymakers, civil society, and international actors to safeguard freedom of expression.
  • Safety and Emergency Support: From providing emergency evacuation and medical aid to offering digital and physical security resources, SRS ensures that journalists facing imminent threats receive the support they need.
  • Capacity-Building and Training: We conduct workshops and hands-on training in conflict-sensitive reporting, digital security, ethical journalism, and safety in hostile environments. This equips journalists with the skills and tools necessary to survive and thrive.
  • Research and Awareness: By documenting violations, publishing reports, and raising public awareness, we highlight the risks Somali journalists face and advocate for stronger protections at national and international levels.

Why Our Work Matters

Somalia remains one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists. Reporters are often caught between armed groups, political actors, and security forces, with many threatened, attacked, or killed simply for doing their jobs.

  • Journalists face censorship and intimidation when reporting on sensitive issues such as corruption, conflict, or human rights abuses.
  • A pervasive lack of accountability allows perpetrators of crimes against journalists to act with impunity.
  • Limited access to safety resources leaves reporters acutely vulnerable while working in the field.

By defending journalists, we are defending the public’s right to know. By protecting press freedom, we are strengthening democracy, transparency, and justice in Somalia.

Our Slogan

  • “Safety for Every Story”
